Notaries in Belgium
Like a lawyer, a notary has studied Law for five years at university, followed by a year of specialization in notaryship. To practise the profession, he must do teaching practise and take a competitive exam with numerus clausus. The notary is qualified to draw up authentic deeds if the law grants him this authority or if a party asks for it. The authentic deeds concern family law, such as marriage certificates, wills, property law like drawing up a mortgage deed, and deeds in a public auction, and civil law such as a memorandum of association and amendments to the articles of association for different kinds of agreements.
