Brabo Technics

跟安特衛普(Antwerpen)地名很有關係的一個景點，位在老城區廣場中間，散步一定會經過的地方，很適合來這邊跟旁邊的商會一起拍照，有時候還會有市集！

Het standbeeld van Brabo staat trots op het midden van de Grote Markt en vertelt de legende van de legionnair Brabo die de hand van de reus Antigoon in de Schelde werpt. Altijd leuk als het standbeeld, net als Manneke Pis kleren aan krijgt.

Фольклорный персонаж Брабо является символом Антверпена, так как именно с ним связана легенда о появлении такого имени города. Давным-давно поселился на реке Шельде очень злобный великан Антигон. Он задерживал все корабли, проплывавшие по Шельде мимо этого места и вымогал с них дань. Тем морякам, которые не могли или не хотели платить дань, великан отрывал руки. Но однажды один смелый римский солдат по имени Сильвиус Брабо рискнул сразиться с великаном и победил его, оторвал ему руку и выбросил в реку. По-нидерландски «бросание руки» будет «hand werpen», откуда и пошло название города. Фонтан без чаши, струи воды просто стекают по камням и исчезают под ними. На камнях лежит поверженное тело великана и разные морские жители – русалки, рыбы, черепахи. По ним обычно карабкаются местные детишки.

This impressive fountain is right in the centre of the square in front of the Town Hall. It is very popular with visitors and is an almost obligatory photo opportunity.

Prachtig plein, lekker kuieren en een goed pintje De Koninck nuttigen in ofwel De Engel of De Bengel. Soms en zeker in de zomer zeer veel toeristen.

Love a legend. The God who taxes people or chops off their hands, has his own chopped off and thrown in the river! Justice! And that's what Antwerp means . . . Hand throwing! Seriously, what's not to love? This is also great to look at when having a cheeky beer in the Grote Markt. Enjoy!

Anche per la sua collocazione all'interno della splendida piazza del mercato, il monumento si presenta in maniera davvero molto significativa ed è uno dei punti caratteristici della città anche perché ricorda un episodio molto noto nella storia di Anversa.

Можно и без легенды (несколько кровавой) посмотреть на фонтан, который не работал. Фонтан ровно посередине площади. А рука… Ее можно найти не только на сувенирах, но и на рисунках, плакатах, это уже символ города.

Prachtig plein met schitterende gebouwen. Het stadhuis stond helaas in de steigers. Leuke terrassen om even te zitten.

Brabo ( Brabofontein ) is a fabulous piece of architecture located in front of City Hall . The work of Jef Lambeaux and unveiled in 1887 this fountain is well detailed, looks amazing and makes for some great photographic opportunities. I love the legend, how the menacing giant called Druon would cut of the hands of ship captains who refused to pay a toll for mooring up in the harbour and throw the severed hands in to the River Scheldt until a Roman army captain called Brabo cut off the hand of the giant and threw the giants hand into the River Scheldt, a good legend that befits such a wonderful evocative statue and fountain. Easy to locate on Grote Markt, most definitely well worth checking out if your in the area.

This bronze fountain, completed in the 1880s, has a bit of interesting history behind it. The reason it's there is, according to some, that it symbolises the origins of the city's name. The fountain story is that a giant used to cut off the hand of any ship captain passing through the area without paying a toll, and then threw the hand into the river. However when the Roman army captain Brabo came along, he refused to pay and instead cut off the giant's hand and threw it in the river! The statue symbolises the moment when the Roman captain throws the hand into the river. The fountain, of course, bears his name. The most interesting part, though, is that a combination of Dutch words, (h)ant" (hand) and "werpen" (launch), have given Antwerp its name! Of course, there are also those who dispute this story and instead attribute Antwerp's name elsewhere. Interesting story, interesting statue and fountain. Worth a visit.

La estatua de Brabo, el soldado romano que cortó la mano al gigante y la arrojó al Escalda ha sido ya descrita previamente por otros colaboradores de Tripadvisor . Actualmente está en obras en su base, por lo que no resulta muy fotogénica.

Lekker eten, supervriendelijk personeel en een gezellig terras. Komen zeker nog terug. Voor ons was het de eerste keer maar zeker niet de laatste :-)

De Grote Markt is al helemaal ingericht voor de winter. Stalletjes met eten en drinken en de sfeer is top. Vooral 's avonds is de sfeer lekker. Gewoon rondwandelen en genieten.

A bustling square, with lots of nice shops and restaurants around the perimeter. There's some specialty beer shops where you can purchase a beer to go and then stroll around town. A great place to take pictures.

Devant l'hôtel de ville, une fontaine en bronze, au somment ce légendaire romain qui tua le géant et qui depuis lance au ciel, victorieux, la main du vaincu.

Cette fontaine qui date de 1887, est dédiée à l’histoire mythologique du soldat et guerrier romain, Silvius Brabo, qui tua le géant Druon Antigone, ou Antigoon, à Anvers. Le géant vivait près du pont sur l’Escaut et exigeait un droit de passage aux bateaux voguant sur l’Escaut. Il tranchait la main des mauvais payeurs, c’est a dire de ceux qui ne pouvaient pas payer ou qui refusaient de payer. Ce géant, pilleur de bateaux, n’arrangeait pas les affaires de la ville et il a été décidé de mettre un terme à cette tyrannie. Le légionnaire romain tua le géant et en représailles de son oppression, il lui trancha la main et la jeta dans le fleuve. La statue évoque ce geste historique du lancé de la main dans l’Escaut. Cette statue est située à Anvers, juste en face de l’Hôtel de ville, et sa particularité est que l’eau de la fontaine s’écoule directement sur les pavés de la place dans un cercle délimité autour de la statue. Ce geste serait à l'origine du nom historique de ville.

This is one of the claims to fame for Antwerp. This statue is beautiful and can be found in the Grote Markt. You will also find many souvenirs of this same statue. Yes, I bought one.

Fontana che si erge al centro della piazza del mercato proprio di fronte al palazzo del comune e commemorativa della leggenda secondo la quale il soldato romano Silvio Brabo uccise e mozzò la mano al gigante Antigoon che pretendeva diritti di passaggio sul fiume Schelda. La città deve il suo nome proprio a questo episodio leggendario. La fontana è anche molto scenografica, quando è in funzione, con una serie di piccoli zampilli che si incrociano tra loro.

Прижимистые бельгийцы решили одним махом все свои национальные легенды и символы в один фонтан запихнуть - получился такой "биг мак", что разобраться в этом наслоении образов можно только пропустив пару бокалов местного бархатного. Такое наслоение человеческих тел и их фрагментов вызвали в моей памяти ассоциации с "Чумной колонной" в Вене и фонтаном "Пожиратель детей" в швейцарском Берне. Мне кажется, уж на отходы от алмазного производства могли бы нанять какого-нибудь итальянца с врождённым чувством прекрасного и гидротехническими познаниями в обустройстве фонтанов, - нет...решили сэкономить! Какие-то невнятные струйки воды брызжут из абсолютно нелогичных мест этой свалки образов - ни тебе умыться, ни ножки помочить. Оказывается, вода здесь не обновляется, а идёт замкнутым циклом...- пить не советую! Эти жмоты даже вторую башню у Собора достраивать не стали - а чего? - и так красиво!

Een absolute aanrader voor toeristen die Antwerpen bezoeken. Vooral naar boven kijken naar de oude huizen. Prachtig.

И без меня найдёте и прочитаете. Так вот городские власти не придумали ничего лучше, как соорудить этому факту из замечательной жизни замечательный памятник. Поставили в виде фонтана по центру Grote Markt. Сюжет в бронзе таков, смотрим снизу вверх и наводим искусствоведческую критику: В основе конструкции три морские нимфы. --- Куда же без них. Город хоть на реке стоит, до моря бежать и бежать, но нимфы точно морские. Сюжет это особенно подчёркивает. Итак нимфы. Держат корабль. Это понятно. --- Торговля Матушка город кормит, а логистика венец её. На корабле почему-то не матросы и товары, а крепость с башнями. Такими же, как и на гербе Антверпена. Здесь тоже два вопроса. --- Как судёнышко может удержать на плаву такое количество строительных материалов, и нести корабль с грузом на вытянутых руках это разве женское дело? --- Дальше вообще круто! На одной из башен лежит отрубленная голова великана. А сам Антигон валяется, истекая кровью и сжимая левой рукой обрубок правой. --- Истинно жизнеутверждающий пейзаж. Над всей этой композицией красуется бравый солдат Брабо в позе метателя расчленёнки. Ни дать ни взять победитель Олимпийских игр по бросанию человеческих останков в длину. --- Что я там говорил про кровавый ренессанс? Антверпен в который раз подтверждает своё звание. Хотя знаете, я бы в сюжетную канву фонтана Брабо включил бы больше натуралистичности. --- Литься из обрубков головы и рук должна не вода, а кровь. Ну или хотя бы слегка подкрашенная розовая водичка... Разглядеть сей шедевр в полный рост мы не смогли. Потому что в день нашего посещения город готовился к какому-то празднику. А апогеем народных гуляний должен был стать концерт на Grote Markt. По этому поводу по всей площади поставили сборно-разборные трибуны, которые и перегородили всё мыслимое и немыслимое пространство. По горизонтали и в объёме. Вид площади был окончательно загублен и оставаться дольше на ней не было никакого смысла. --- Двигаем дальше. Здесь всё равно ловить больше нечего...

The statue is part of Antwerps history and folklore and a must-see in the historic city center. Unfortunately, very often the fountain doesn't work and the statue on its own is less spectaculair. It represents the Roman soldier Brabo who throws the hand of a giant Druon Antigoon in the river Schelde. Translated into Dutch 'handthrowing' is 'handwerpen'. If you corrupt that, you get Antwerpen. So he represents the legend of the name of the city. The square itself is one of the place to be to sit on a terrace watching people pass by. It's where the market is, some (music) events and of course -in the back of Brabo- the city hall, with the mayors office. The place to see and be seen.

Brabo stands in the centre of the Grote Markt, holding a giant hand aloft, according to folklore ithe river Schelde was controlled by the giant Antigon requiring a toll payment. When this Josef Lambeaux’s commissioned work was unveiled, apparently the populace was astonished by it..and not in a good way! From historical accounts, it was considered grotesque, garish, and lewd….and like some of his other works, controversial and a huge waste of money. I guess similar sentiments are probably echoed today about some modern sculptures! But in its day, the complete nudity of all the figures, their stance and the general scene was not well received by many. This bronze creation is called the Brabo fountain, named after Silvius Brabo, a mythical Roman soldier who apparently killed a giant called Druon Antigoon, cut off his hand and tossed it into the river; hence the depiction of him doing this at the top of the sculpture. Lambeaux’s claim to fame was the ability to portray force and motion in his works and this is no exception! He was clearly a gifted artist. It’s a pity he didn’t live to see the wide embrace and appreciation of his sculpture many decades later which is now so well-loved and inimitable.

Mitten auf dem Grote Markt, dem Herz Antwerpens steht dieser schöne, nach dem tapferen Römer Brabo benannte Brunnen. Dieser besiegte einen Riesen, der allen vorbeifahrenden Händlern Wege- zoll abknöpfte. Für den Fall, dass dieser nicht geleistet wurde, hackte er ihnen jeweils eine Hand ab. Angeblich lässt sich daraus der Name Antwerpen ableiten. Eine schöne David/Goliath-Geschichte, aber vor allem ein schön gestalteter Brunnen.

Я обожаю льющуюся воду - водопады, фонтаны, особенно такие красивые. Фотографии получились не очень, так как был яркий майский день и засветы мешают передать красоту этого фонтана, который является украшением этой площади. Необычность этого фонтана ещё и в том, что нет резервуара вокруг фонтана , где обычно собирается вода. Вокруг фонтана есть подсветка, хотелось бы увидеть его ночью.

Этот фонтан в центре Гроте Маркт, кажется, существует тут давно, но, оказывается, он появился лишь в конце XIX-го века и символизирует одну из местных легенд про великана. Без него площадь смотрелась бы гораздо проще.

A statue depicting the founding story of Antwerp which is hard to miss in the Grote Markt. It's very pretty and iconic in the city. It gets a little hidden when to Market is on, but well worth seeing.

While walking in Antwerpen we saw this impressive statue Brabo. Great to photograph and on a beautiful location too. I like it when a statue has space around.

Nice statue on the market square, not a must see, but one you will surely see when you are in Antwerp anyway, just a bit surprised to find that it has it’s own listing.

Maybe I’m missing something, but it’s just a statue. It’s nice but I’ve seen plenty that are nicer. I guess because there's a story behind it, it makes it worth a very quick stop.

Brabo is a cool monument/ fountain that looks absolutely amazing,located in the Grote Markt it shows the Roman soldier Brabo throwing the severed hand of the giant Druon Antigoon away ,this is were Antwerp got it's name . It's a superb looking piece of architecture that makes for some great photographic opportunities. Well worth checking out.

I read so much about the old city centre of Antwerp and the Brabo monument. Coming face to face with this monument that encapsulates the legend behind founding of Antwerp is a memorable event. Especially considering the journey that brought me here took months and months of planning. The Brabo monument enhances the beauty of the Grote Markt which is surrounded by the majestic town hall, the guild halls and the monumental buildings.

My home city has the Washington Monument and the Capitol Buildings for its symbols, Brabo seems to be one for Antwerp! Located at the center of Grote Market, it is easy to find! Near by are the Stadhuis, Tourist Office, the Cathedral, restaurants and shops.

This is a statue with an interesting legend attached which you can see in other recent reviews. Given that Antwerpen supposedly means 'hand throwing' this Brabo legend re the severed hand is where the name of the city and its people comes from, no doubt explaining their attachment to it. It is also apparently a fountain although in the four days we've been here there has been so many activities in the square that it has obviously been turned off which is disappointing. We have three more days, so fingers crossed! If you're in Antwerp as a tourist you'll inevitably see this statue of Brabo and the giant's hand as it's part of the key suite of tourist attractions around the Cathedral. A lovely area and a nice legend for an interesting piece of public art.

Definitely go into this marketplace to see the statue and surrounding architecture. Beautiful area. So many people around, they will gladly take your picture. Park for free about 10 minutes south.

The statue of Brabo stands in the middle of Grote Markt. It is a green man (oxidised copper probably) holding a hand. The story goes that there was once a giant who demanded money from people who wished to cross a bridge over the river Scheldt. OIf they refused to pay the giant would cut off their hand and throw it into the river. Brabo was a Roman soldier who killed the giant and cur off his hand. When we were there there was a pop festival; hundreds of people, lots of noise which did somewhat spoil the ambience of the square which had to be roped off the police due to the numbers of the crowds.

The legend that Brabo, a Roman, killed a giant that was charging people a toll to cross the river, is represented by this statue. If people did not pay the toll, the giant cut off their hand. Brabo cut off the giants hand and threw it. The story is later used to describe how Antwerp got its name (hand throwing). Very cool story and fountain! There is also a statue of a hand in Antwerp! Just wished we had not been there during market when the water is turned off. Worth a look on a walking tour!

It is a great statue that depicts the city's history. Remember that it is a fountain! When we first saw it, there was a market going on so there was no water flowing. Imagine our surprise to see the water flowing from the severed hand, the stump where the hand was, and the neck after decapitation. It's fabulous!

The statue of Silvius Brabo is not the most obvious monument. How often can you find a dismembered-hand-throwing statue related to an ancient legend in the very center of a city? Do have a read about the legend behind!

Seeing the breathtaking architecture of years gone by is such a privilege. This square is so beautiful with the cobbled paths, statues, restaurants and shops - so much history and definitely not to be missed.

Silvius Brabo was the first Belgium soldier for fair taxation and the statue erected in front of Antwerp Town Hall was made on his memory. The Square was always crowded with people, both day and night. Anyway, this should be a historical site good for activities by local residents.

According to legend, at the mouth of the Scheldt giant Antigonus collected tribute from passing ships. It was so great that, allegedly, standing with their feet on both banks. If the captain didn't want to pay or didn't do it on time, he cut off his hand and threw it into the Scheldt. Brabo did the same thing by Antigone. It gave its name to Antwerp, as "ant" in Flemish - hand and "werpen" - throw. The legend shows the historical truth is that fair trade, and taxes set by force. Remember it is possible and is the case across the channel, when the English king Charles I paid with his head, literally for unauthorized Parliament raising taxes.Although given that Brabo was according to legend by the nephew of Gaius Julius Caesar, it was rather the fight against racketeering. The monument itself is somewhat reminiscent of its style and composition the Salvador Dali's painting "Premonition of civil war".Although given that the sculpture was built by Jef Lambeaux in 1887, it is , rather, the premonition of Dali hisself.. Functionally, the symbol of Antwerp is a fountain, but without a pool is a closed loop.

However it is important as this is how Antwerp got its name from Brabo throwing the giants hand into the river. You find this out from a guided tour though as no information in the square

This is the historical center of Antwerp and it is beautiful...great photos for the family vacation album...but more importantly it is the statue of Silvius Brabo the mythical Roman soldier who slew the giant cut off his hand and threw it in the river and became the local hero. It is located right in front of Antwerp City Hall (which is also has nice architecture).

The Brabo statue is a beautiful statue/fountain in the Grote Markt in front of the Town Hall. It's a great spot for a touristy picture and in warm weather a place for the kids to play.

Grote Markt Antwerpen and Brabo... one of the most beautiful places in Antwerpen to visit.. No traffic allowed, and one very good tip I can give you.. look up! Almost all architecture is finished in gold, exquisit!

Wonderful statue and an amazing legend. Antwerp is a fantastic city and a visit to the statue of Brabo is a must. There is usually some kind of music going on in the evenings in the square.

The city of Antwerp is very nice to stroll arround, nice buildings, bars and restaurants and some cute shops to buy some presents. We've been shopping all saturday and had a great time. Also the city hall looks nice.

One of the best fountains in Europe. Huge and unique, it is one of the best things I ever saw in my life. Interesting also the history of its main character, the warrior who freed the city from a giant. This fountain is probably the biggest example of how rich and important this city has always been.

If people did not give him money, he would then cut their hand and throw to the river. To this respect Brabo became a legend and best spot to honor him was the Grote Markt, surrounded by the remarkable buildings and the City Hall. Definitely spend some time to shoot nice photos. Scenery is ideal both daytime and night. Grote Markt, the city's main square, is worth a visit!

Old city squares that is. Flanked by churches and other buildings in perfect condition. Very few tourists mid morning when I was there. Interestingly they were setting up for the Trials worlds - would have been great o have watched had the diary permitted. Brabo is a 'nice to have' but it is not the highlight.

Brabo cut off a hand of Antigoon and threw it into the Scheldt river. In Dutch, ‘hant’ means hand, like you could guess, and ‘werpen’ means to throw. Hence: Hantwerpen. The H disappeared, Antwerp remained. The legendary liberator Brabo stands on the Grote Markt since 1887.

This market is very romantic during the evening time when all the lights are on, especially during a typical cold rainy day it gives a special image and atmosphere which is typical for this market place. During the day it looks very different. You do not want to drive with all the pedestrians walking around and taking pictures of the statue. Great place with a multitude of cafes. Most of them are covered outside.

Nice crowdy place with lots of places to drink 0.25 Belgian beer in hot weather and look around. The city overall is beautiful and nice to visit and also live here.

As the title states it is a beautiful statue set in the midst of a beautiful setting of the Stadhuis, Cathedral and many excellent shops and cafes

One of the interesting things to see in the city center of Antwerp is the Brabo fountain situated in the centre of Grote Markt. Designed and installed (1883-1887) by Jef Lambeaux, this fountain is of the mythical Roman soldier who slayed the giant named Antigoon It is a interesting monument depicting the moment when Brabo threw the dead giant's hand into the river. Brabo is standing on a small castle which is being supported by mermaids. Several animals, including a dragon decorate the base of the fountain. It is a neat fountatin for those who enjoying seeing these type attractions during their travels. Note: During our March visit the water sprouts were expectedly not turned on. This is something you should be able to enjoy during the warmer months of the year when the fountain is functioning.

If you'll go the the Brabo, you can also see the Grote Markt (market on which the Brabo is placed) and the Townhall of Antwerpen. From this place you can reach many other attractions quick by foot.

You will find Brabo if you're on our magnificent Grand Place. He throws the severed hand of the giant Antigoon in the Schelde and made so free transit in the harbor.

Beautiful very large statue of Roman warrior Brabo holding up the hand of a giant. It is situated in the center of the Great Market Square in old Antwerp. Guild Halls on one side and Town Hall on another. You'll see a dragon on the base and Brabo holding up the severed hand aloft.

This attraction is a UNESCO world heritage, and it fully deserves it. The buildings surrounding the square, the statue in the middle explaining the city's name, all are just great!

If you go to Antwerpen this is a sculpture that you can't miss. Located in front of the City Hall. Nice add to the center. Visited twice for the past few years. Great city that is well worth to visit. Plenty of restaurants in the Grote Markt that you can sit and enjoy the view.

You're in the Grotemarkt, so Brabo is pretty difficult to miss. A nice piece of sculpture and a landmark of the area. There are two Irish pubs nearby, so once you've finished marveling at Brabo you can cool down with a pint of the black stuff.

It was sculptured in the 19th century. You will simply pass by it when you stroll in the heart of old Antwerp.

The main statues placed right in the center of the city, just in front of the cathedral. Brabo as far as I know he was a local hero here, in fact he's depicted holding a huge hand just ripped off from a giant which was defeated to defend the city from the tyranny of this enemy. However good spot where to get magnificent pictures.

I have always found that this water fountain is the main starting point for our site tour around this lovely city! It is located in front of the city hall & very close to the lovely historic church. The tourists & locals can enjoy this area where the shops & restaurants can be enjoyed by all!

On first glance a visitor could not guess what the importance of this fountain in the main market square in front of the Town Hall is. For those who could not afford or refused to pay the toll the giant would cut off their hands and through them in the river. Gruesome. The hand is a symbol of the city and the meaning behind the city's name.

Brabo fountain sits in Grote Markt,it is a great photo opportunity, it is in the heart of the old city, surrounded by the Town Hall and other amazing looking buildings There are plenty of small cafes to take a rest whilst admiring the views, only a 3 minute walk from Groenplaats

The fountain, by itself is underwhelming. However given its location in the Grote Market, flanked by architectural buildings, this place is worth visiting. There is a history attached to the fountain and the photo opportunities are good and scenic.

It's just a statue, the fun part is the story of how Antwerp got it's name. The statue is great with the city hall on the background and surrounded by wonderful and beautiful houses .

Nothing special but it is a part of Antwerp, lkie de Meir, De Keyserlei, De Groenplaats etc... Although I prefer my native city Gent, which is more beautiful, cosy, nice and everything reachable on walking distance.
